Using a dummy at 8 months and up to 2 ½ - 3 years

By teaching them that they have control of the dummy, they will be more likely to replace it themselves.

Attach the dummy to a muslin cloth or ‘sleepytot’, so it is easier for the baby to find.

Day 1 - During the day put the dummy in their hand, not in the mouth when they wake. If they can't put the dummy in their mouth guide their hand to their mouth. Do this at each wake-up, when a feed isn't due. Try this for the next few days.

Day 4 - Put the dummy in their hand, but don't guide it to their mouth. They should now have the co-ordination at 8 months.

Day 7 - No longer put the dummy in their hand. Allow the baby to pick it up from the mattress and do it themselves. If they still can't find the dummy, using your hand, bounce the mattress where the dummy is, so they look where you are making the noise/movement and encourage them to pick it up themselves.
